Do you know how to tell if someone is truly a coin collector or savvy investor? Mention the Indian Head Gold Coin and see their eyes immediately shine. Indian Head Gold Coins are extremely rare and well sought by coin collectors and gold investors all over the globe. Why is an Indian Head Gold Coin such a great investment? First, you have to know of its history:
The $10 Indian Head Gold Coin was only minted from the years 1907-1933. President Roosevelt had a desire to create a new and unique US coin. The famous sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens was chosen for the job. The sculptor originated a design and passed the image to Adolph Weinman (also well known for the Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar). One side features an American 'Miss Liberty' profile wearing a headdress along with stars to represent US states, while the other side of the $10 Indian Head Gold Coin features a perched eagle.
In 1908, Roosevelt asked for a new, five-dollar Indian Head Gold Coin. The designer, Bela Pratt used a very unique design for this version. The brandished head on the top of the coin was not raised above the coin but sculpted in an incuse fashion as to rest sunken within the coin. Like the $10 Indian Head Gold Coin, very few $5 coins were minted. In 1929, the crash of the stock market inspired the depression ceasing all production of the Indian Head Gold Coin, making the coin one of the rarest and most sought after.
Indian Head Gold Coins are sought by both intense collectors and savvy investors. Collecting Indian Head Gold Coins is an excellent investment due to the long-term rewards.
